Are they crazy? No - they are blessed!
Our dear friends Alison and John have been in Ethiopia this week to adopt a 6 year old and 3 year old girl. This amazing couple has 5 grown children and a 5 and a 7 year old adopted from China. When I have told friends and relatives about this couple's journey for their new daughters, people have said "Are they crazy?!" or "Better them than us!" No - they are not crazy. They have been called by God to open their hearts to the true gift of these children in their lives.
"Why didn't you adopt in the US?" people have asked us. The simple answer is that every child deserves a home of their own. Is a US child somehow more deserving? I could go into vivid detail about the hurdles we faced for almost 3 years trying to adopt unsuccessfully in the U.S. from the foster care system or private placement. There are horror stories about domestic adoptions gone wrong just as their are situations where foreign adoptions can go horribly wrong. For us, we knew we had the love to give and the resources for another child, and then another. Our agency, Holt International, has a mission to find families for children - not children for families. It's a good thing there are so many crazy parents out there or most of us wouldn't be around. The Gods must be crazy!:)
